The Bet/Vow That Wasn’t Honoured

"I am embarrassed to occupy the same space as some imbeciles and morons."

"Barbarians have taken over this community using the anonymity, most of the time, of the Internet to sit somewhere and start writing rubbish, questioning the right of people like me to express ourselves."

"What is the business of any stupid Nigerian to open his or her mouth to challenge my right? Did you get the green card for me? The arrogance of some Nigerians is overwhelming, and I don’t interfere, so how dare you interfere with me?"

"I should not be exiting the United States but Nigeria because the people on behalf of whom one has struggled all one’s life can be so slavish in mentality as to start querying the right of their champion to free speech.

~ Prof Wole Soyinka

(The worst thing to do to a critic is to criticize him)
THE  RESPONSE:

Dear Wole Soyinka,

Yes, I deliberately left out your well-worn title of 'Prof' in addressing you, for I find it totally impossible to equate someone who carries the title like a badge of honour (which it truly is, even though I have met a few with that title who barely qualify for one by their utterances and actions).

And no, I proffer no apologies whatsoever for addressing you, sans title.

You see, Wole Soyinka,  I might have trashed this latest ranting of yours along with the previous ones had you not dare to foolishly and stupidly referred to us Nigerians who dared stand up to you and asked that you live up to the bet you senselessly made, as 'stupid'.

You see, because I am a Nigerian and certainly questioned the wisdom of a geriatric to first of all, make an unforced error by publicly betting on the electoral outcome of a land so far away and totally disconnected from the "people on behalf of whom one has struggled all one's life", and two, rather than live up to such ill-advised bet, you went on a wild goose chase of questioning the sanity of people who, out of their desire to see you retain a modicum of what's left of your dignity, I feel personally insulted by your "stupid Nigerians" comment.

And I certainly do not respond quite well to personal insults.

As a matter of fact, like the geisha, I give a whole lot more than I have been attacked with.
So pardon me (no, scratch that, I seek no pardon) for seeing your latest vituperation in the exact light it ought to be seen: the muddled production of a mind so befuddled by the vicissitude of advancing senility.

For one thing, Soyinka, I think you overstate the importance of your Nobel Prize, extremely too highly. Otherwise, I do not think there's anything of note that you have done in your lifetime that would warrant you to collectively but arrogantly refer to a whole nation as "stupid".

Yes, you're the only Nigerian to have ever been conferred with (not won, mind you) Nobel Prize. But may I remind you, Wole, there have been 29 other people conferred with that award since you last received (not won, I repeat) yours, four of them fellow Africans: one from Egypt and Mauritius each, and two from South Africa.

Now, you know what's so remarkable about these other four (and in fact all the 113 people worldwide who have received the Nobel in Literature since Albert Nobel died and instituted it)? None of them has allowed the award to go to their heads.

But of course these people are not Nigerians,  so they do not worship an almost worthless title.

I mean, you got the Nobel in Literature, not in Medicine, Engineering or Nuclear Physics, for Pete's sake! What does it really take to be awarded these prizes? Write a few novels and blow some inconsequential grammar? Let me remind you, Wole, Bob Dylan, a regular folk who just happen to be a pop singer, got the most recent version of your award! Bob Dylan has never written a single novel nor is he known for blowing big grammar and manufacturing his own words!

If that's not enough to tell you the award has very little or no significance,  listen to this: Bob Dylan has not deemed it fit to acknowledge or accept the over-rated thing, an act that perfectly reflects the worthlessness of the same thing for which you have developed a big head and talk down on your fellow countrymen.

Get real, Wole Soyinka; you went and brought an ant infested wood into your house, it is only natural that you would have lizards struggling for the same space with you.

You say do not interfere in the life of Nigerians, and you wonder how dare they interfere with yours? Wole, I know with advancing senility comes forgetfulness so I'd forgive for forgetting that your life has been one of interfering with that of Nigerians - right from the Gowon days till the last administration of Jonathan.

And no, Nigerians did not get the green card for you. Neither did the Ghanaians from whose territory you chose to make it public that you would tear your green card if Donald Trump wins. Now, what business has anyone with you tearing or throwing away your green card? Why did you choose to make such childish tantrum public?

For a supposedly well-lettered fellow like yourself, I'm dumbfounded that you would call the internet "anonymous". Perhaps I need to educate you a little here: there's nothing anonymous about the internet or the social media. As a matter of fact, the internet disrobes you of your anonymity once you sign on into it.

Type in my name now and you'll most likely find the story of my entire life on there.

So, Wole, nobody hides behind the anonymity of the internet to write anything. And yes, just like you have questioned the right of leaders past to do what they do, questioning your right (not your right to freedom of expression) comes with the territory.

So you're embarrassed to occupy the same space with "imbeciles" and "morons"? That's no problem.  At 82, you won't have much to tolerate them. Nature will soon take you away from this land of imbeciles and morons, to a land filled with dead and tired imbecilic geriatrics like yourself.

Thank you for reading this rather long response to your unprovoked tantrums. I hold forth no apologies for its length; that is the writing style that got you your notoriety the first place!

Yours sincerely,
One of the Stupid Nigerians You Referenced.

What They Left Out

When a Pope died and was as expected admitted into heaven, he was received by a high power reception committee. After a whirlwind tour and was told that he could enjoy any of the myriad of recreations for eternity, he decided that he would rather read all of the ancient original texts of the Holy Scriptures. So he spent time learning ancient languages. And after becoming Linguistic enough, he sat at a remote corner in the library and began to pour over every version of the scriptures, working back from most recent "Easy Reading" to the original scripts.

All of a sudden there was a heart rendering scream from his corner of the library. The Angels came running in, only to find the Pope huddled in his chair, sobbing and muttering to himself, "An 'R'! An 'R'! The scribes left out the 'R'." A particularly concerned Angel took him aside, offered a soothing comfort, and asked what the problem was. After collecting his wits, the Pope sobbed once more and said, "It's the letter 'R'! They left out the 'R'! The word was supposed to be CELEBRATE!"

The Power Of, I Am Sorry

“I am sorry!” Is a short but mighty sentence! Many people have gone to an early grave because they either forgot or neglected the therapeutic power of, “I am sorry.” So if you wish to live a long and happy life, don't joke with the therapeutic power of, “I am sorry.” Most of the troubles in most homes are heightened because many wives feel too big to say, “I am sorry,” to their husbands. And you can trust the ego of many husbands, preventing them to say, “I am sorry,” to their wives. So quarrels linger between spouses, family and friends because no party wants to say, “I am sorry.” Each party feels, says or asks, “Why should I be the first to say, I am sorry?” He or she would beat his or her chest and utter the ego phrase, “A whole me!”

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the part of the world where saying, “I am sorry,” is a hard nut to crack while curses are easily unleashed. Welcome to the part of the world where people refer to a person who says, “I am sorry,” in a midst of a rift as a weaker sex, one who is not man enough, or one who is foolish. Welcome to our world, where saying, “I am sorry,” is tougher than forcing a donkey, through the eye of a needle. We have all been guilty at one time or the other. We have lost valuable assets, money and even lives because of our inability to use this simple, affordable and therapeutic sentence, “I am sorry.” It is simple! It only costs a simple breath of speech!!

Domestic and community violence is less pronounced in some other parts of the world, because they appreciate the efficacy of saying, “I am sorry.” Their leaders use it, their parents use it, their children use t, their families use it, their spouses use it, their friends use it, their neighbours use it and their communities use it. And life goes on fine. Let us cultivate the habit of saying, “I am sorry.” It isn’t as difficult as you think. So my brothers, sisters and friends and starting from me; if I have knowingly or unknowingly offended you in one way or the other, I hereby say, “I am sorry!” Have a blessed day.

How To Create And Maintain A Happy Life

1.       The easiest way to a miserable life is to think everybody is talking about you. Learn to ignore and overlook many things if you truly want happiness in your life.
2.       Never allow anyone to steal your joy from you.
3.       Never worry yourself about what people say behind your back because its none of your business as long as you are true to yourself.
4.       Sometimes minding your own business does not keep people out of your business. No matter your situation in life people will always talk. You can never stop people from talking about you, what you can do is to stop giving them what to talk about.
5.       There is a time limit for every rumor in life. Never allow freelance broadcasters put your life in hold. Do what makes you happy. Anyone who cannot feel your pain has no right to judge you in life. 70% of those who talk bad about you behind your back wish to be like you.
6.       When people can't be like you they try to bring you down and condemn what you have. Those without money will sarcastically say money is not everything in life. (Is poverty anything?)
7.       Never allow anyone to put you in a position of depression and self pity in life. Those whose life has no joy will always find every means to remove happiness from other people’s life.
8.       Enemies are inevitable if there's GRACE of GOD in your life. If no one has never gossiped or talked bad about you means nothing good has ever happened to you. Grace can turn an old friend to a new enemy.
9.       Never feel bad when old friends become new enemies. They are just tired of acting painfully like enemies as friends.
10.   Never allow the opinions of people who didn't see your tears stop your laughter in life. You don't owe anybody an explanation to be happy.
11.   Never see yourself through the eyes of those who don't value you.
12.   To be beautiful means to be yourself; and to stand out is to be out-standing. You do not need to be accepted by others. You just need to accept yourself.
13.   Never beg anyone to accept you for who you are. Anything you acquire through begging will require begging to maintain.
14.   Be humble but selective. Being selective doesn't mean you are arrogant or proud. It simply means you know your worth. If you are conscious of your personality avoid too much familiarity.
15.   Sometimes when you treat people too much like celebrities, they end up treating you like ordinary fan. You are equally important.
16.   Never downgrade yourself while trying to upgrade anybody in life. Anyone who sees you like an option doesn't deserve to be a priority in your life.
17.   The dream of a fool is for everybody to become a bloody fool. Avoid negative people if you have a dream. Those without mission will say your vision is just an illusion.
18.   Negative minds will never give you a positive life. Anyone who is always reminding you about what is wrong with you has a personal problem which he/she wants to take out on you.
19.   Most people spend half of their entire life analyzing the faults in other peoples’ lives, when their own lives need urgent repairs.
20.   Never worry yourself about enemies and friends, because everybody in your life will eventually fall into one of two categories.
21.   Some will hate you and some will love you. Loving you or hating you are both in your favor. When people love you, you live peacefully and happily in their heart; and when people hate you, you become the landlord in their head living painfully in their brain everyday and giving them sleepless nights.
22.   Never allow negative people to rent a space in your life, kick them out of your life and increase the rent.
