During Emeka and Abimbola’s first dinner date and as they sat in the
restaurant eating, Abimbola asked her date, “Can you cook?" With a mouthful
of fried rice and stuff, Emeka managed to reply, “Hmmm, not really; though I do
manage to prepare noodles and cook some beans.” And Abimbola scoffed and asked,
“How can anyone not know how to cook? I can't marry a man that can't cook. Such
a man believes it is a woman's duty to cook, that a woman's place is in the
kitchen. Sheesh, I can't deal.” Emeka just swallowed hard but said nothing,
though remembering all those times she had begged him to help her put on her
generator set.
After dinner, he escorted her to her car; as they had both come
straight from work and in their separate cars. And as she made to get behind
the wheels, she discovered that she had a flat tyre. He then asked her
innocently, “Can you change a flat tyre?" And while waving her well-manicured
fingers, she answered matter-of-factly, “No, of course not.” Still maintaining
that innocent look, he asked, “How can anyone not know how to change a flat
tyre? I can't date such a lady oh! She definitely believes a man's place is in
a mechanic's workshop. Sheesh!" With that, he climbed into his car and
zoomed off, leaving her with her mouth agape in shock. With the thought of the nearest
vulcanizer miles away, and already getting dark, she cursed, “Asshole!”
